Taking Your Grill On-The-Go

The HALO Prime1500 Outdoor Pellet Grill is a state-of-the-art choice for outdoor cooking, providing outstanding versatility, portability, and performance. It features a large cooking surface and an upper smoking rack on its larger units, allowing you to make the most of your cooking and entertaining endeavors.

This smoker pellet grill is equipped with patented ignitor technology, allowing you to power it using either the included AC adapter or a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (sold separately), providing you with a truly untethered cooking experience.

In this article, we will provide you with essential tips to help you start your grill, regulate the grill temperature, optimize your grill's performance, cool your grill down, and even take your grill on the go.

Powering Your Pellet Grill

To power your HALO Prime Outdoor Pellet Grill, you have two options:

  1. A/C adapter: This option involves plugging the grill into a grounded (GFCI) outdoor receptacle that operates on 120 volts.
  2. 12V Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery: Alternatively, you can use a rechargeable battery specifically designed for the grill. You can choose to use either the battery or the A/C adapter, or even use both simultaneously by plugging them into the unit.

These power options provide flexibility and convenience when it comes to operating your HALO Prime Outdoor Pellet Grill.

Starting Your Grill:

Before grilling or smoking food on your HALO Prime Pellet Grill for the first time, you will need to perform a First Use Pellet Grill Burn-off, after which you can follow these simple steps to start your grill:

  1. Connect the A/C adapter power cord to a grounded (GFCI) power supply or insert the Halo 12-Volt Lithium Battery (Battery Sold Separately).
  2. Press the control button once to turn on the unit. The screen will flash and then turn solid. Press the control button again to access the function screen. Rotate the control button to the Temperature function.
  3. Press the control button once more to confirm the Temperature setting. Rotate the control button to your desired smoke, cook, or sear temperature. Press the control button one more time to set the temperature and start the unit.
  4. Ensure the searing damper is closed. The ignitor will activate for a few seconds to confirm proper ignition, and the igniter icon will appear on the top of the controller screen. The unit will feed pellets into the burn pot, and the ignitor will come on again to start the unit. The unit is lit when the temperature on the controller increases, and smoke is emitted from the back of the unit.

Tips for Starting your Pellet Grill

When starting your pellet grill, it's important to keep in mind a few tips to ensure a smooth ignition process.

  • Achieving the Desired Temperature - Depending on the type or brand of pellets you are using, it may take around 20-30 minutes for the temperature to stabilize. If you encounter any ignition issues, try opening the searing damper during the startup procedure to promote proper ignition. The type or brand of pellets can also affect the ignition process.
  • Utilizing the Searing Damper Feature - To achieve consistent temperatures across the entire cooking surface when smoking food, it is recommended to keep the searing damper closed. The sear feature, which quickly sears food over an open flame, is typically used at higher temperature settings (350°F – 500°F) after smoking is complete. When the searing damper handle is pushed toward the pellet grill body, it is in the closed position. Conversely, when the handle is extended away from the pellet grill body, it is in the open position.

First Use Pellet Grill Burn-off

Before using your pellet grill for the first time with food, it is crucial to perform a burn-off. This process involves starting the pellet grill and setting it to the highest heat (350-375°F)/(176-191°C) with the lid closed for 30 to 45 minutes. The purpose of the burn-off is to eliminate any impurities and prepare the grill for optimal cooking performance.

Regulating the Grill Temperature:

Built-in Temperature Sensor

  • The HALO Prime Pellet Grill is equipped with an RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) sensor probe inside the grill. Inside the smoke chamber, on the left side, you'll find the RTD-temperature probe. This probe is a small, vertical piece of stainless steel that is designed to measure the internal temperature of the unit. When you adjust the temperature on the Control Board, the temperature probe will accurately read the actual temperature inside the unit and automatically adjust it to your desired temperature.
  • It's important to keep in mind that the temperature of your grill can be influenced by factors such as outdoor weather conditions, the quality and flavor of the pellets used, and the amount of food being cooked.

Internal Meat Temperatures

  • HALO Meat Probes are designed to measure the internal temperature of your meat in the smoke chamber. To use the meat probe, plug in the HALO meat probe adapter to the meat probe connection port and insert the stainless steel meat probe into the thickest part of your meat. The temperature will be displayed on the control board. To ensure a proper connection, you should feel and hear the meat probe snap into place in the connection port.
  • When inserting the HALO meat probe into your meat, make sure to keep the probe and its wires away from direct contact with flames or excessive heat. This can cause damage to the meat probe. You can run any excess wire along the edge of the front lid. When the meat probe is not in use, disconnect it from the meat probe connection port and store it in a clean and protected place. Remember to place the protective cap on the probe to prevent moisture from accumulating inside the jack receptacle.

Grilling Tips for Optimal Performance:

The HALO Prime Series pellet grills are equipped with a porcelain grill grate that has a non-stick surface. and also features a Tuck-away upper smoking rack for more versatility in your cook space. To get the most out of your pellet grill and elevate your cooking experience, follow these smoking tips.

  • Choose Quality Pellets: Use high-quality wood pellets made from 100% hardwood with no fillers or additives. Different wood flavors can impart unique tastes to your food.
  • Preheat the Grill: Always preheat the pellet grill with the lid closed to the desired cooking temperature before placing your food on the grate. This ensures even cooking and accurate temperature control.
  • Keep the Lid Closed: Opening the lid frequently can cause temperature fluctuations and extend cooking times. Only open the lid when necessary, such as when flipping or checking on the food.
  • Use an External Thermometer: While pellet grills come with built-in temperature probes, using an external meat thermometer allows you to check the internal temperature of your food without opening the grill, minimizing heat loss.
  • Position Food Correctly: Place thicker cuts of meat closer to the heat source and thinner cuts farther away to ensure even cooking. If your grill has a hot spot, adjust your food placement accordingly.
  • Avoid Excessive Smoke: While some smoke flavor is desirable, too much smoke can result in bitter-tasting food. Make sure your grill is clean, and the pellets you use are of good quality to prevent excessive smoke.
  • Regularly Clean the Grill: Clean the grill grates, grease tray, and ash collection system after each use to maintain optimal airflow and prevent flare-ups.
  • Check the Grease Container: Removing the grease from the grease container is essential to maintaining a clean grill and preserving the delicious flavor of your food. HALO Prime Pellet Grills are equipped with an XL grease management system that directs grease away from the firepot. For quick and easy cleanup, use our convenient Grease Container Foil Liners.
  • Experiment with Temperatures: Different foods and cooking techniques require various temperature settings. Experiment to find the best temperatures for your preferred cooking style and the specific dish you're preparing.
  • Sear Properly: Some pellet grills have a sear function, while others might require additional accessories for searing. Searing helps lock in juices and creates a flavorful crust on meats.
  • Be Patient: Pellet grills excel at low and slow cooking. Don't rush the process. Allow enough time for the smoke and heat to work their magic on your food.
  • Monitor Wind and Weather: Wind and cold weather can affect cooking times and temperature stability. Consider using windbreaks or insulation blankets in extreme conditions.
  • Consider Pellet Hopper Levels: Keep an eye on your pellet hopper's pellet level, especially for longer cooks. Running out of pellets mid-cook can disrupt the cooking process.
  • Maintenance: Regularly maintain your pellet grill by cleaning it and inspecting components to ensure consistent performance.
  • Keep an Eye on Pellet Quality: Store your pellets in a dry place to prevent moisture absorption, which can lead to issues like auger jams.
  • Experiment and Have Fun: Pellet grills offer a wide range of cooking possibilities. Don't be afraid to experiment with different flavors, techniques, and recipes to make the most of your grill.

    Cooling Your Grill:

After cooking, allow the grill to cool down before cleaning and storage. Leaving the lid open during the cooling process speeds up the process. Once cooled, follow the regular cleaning and storage tips (see Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Prime Pellet Grill) to keep your grill in optimum condition.
