In this article, we will provide you with essential tips to effectively maintain your Prime Pellet Grill, ensuring it stays in excellent condition for years to come.

Regular Cleaning and Storage:

Cleaning the Inside Surfaces

  • Before cleaning the inside surfaces of your grill, make sure to turn off the unit by pressing the controller dial for 2 seconds. Disconnect the A/C Adaptor power cord or detach the battery pack to ensure safety. It's best to clean accumulated grease when the grill is still warm but not hot to make it easier to remove. Be cautious not to burn yourself and consider wearing gloves for protection.
  • Regularly clean the grease plate and grease drain to prevent any potential grease fires. If too much grease builds up in the grease drip tray or clogs the grease drain, it can be a fire hazard. We highly recommend cleaning these areas on a regular basis.
  • To clean the inside surfaces, start by removing the porcelain-coated grill grid and the grease cup. Use a scraper or a nonmetallic tool to scrape off any grease accumulation from inside the grease drip tray. You can wash the grease plate in hot, soapy water. Use paper towels or disposable rags to wipe away any remaining grease residue from the interior surfaces of the grill.

Cleaning the RTD Sensor and Meat Probe

  • It is important to properly clean and care for the RTD sensor and meat probe to ensure accurate temperature readings and prevent damage. When not in use, it is recommended to roll up the meat probe in a large, loose coil to avoid twists and folds that may cause damage.
  • Although the probe is made from stainless steel, it should be cleaned with a wet washcloth and mild detergent. Avoid placing it in the dishwasher or submerging it in water, as this can cause water damage to the internal wires and result in false temperature readings. If the probe is damaged, it should be replaced to maintain accurate temperature monitoring.

Cleaning the Cooking Grid

Take caution to avoid burns. The optimal time to clean the grill grid is when it is still warm. It is recommended to use a long-handle cleaning brush for this task.

  • Once you have finished grilling and removed the food, give the grill grid a quick brush. It only takes a minute to get it ready for your next grilling session.
  • Alternatively, you can clean the cooking grid using warm water and a mild detergent. This method is effective for removing any remaining residue on the grid.

Cleaning the Exterior Surfaces

To clean the outer surfaces of your pellet grill, begin by turning off the unit and disconnecting the A/C Adaptor power cord. It's important to make sure that the grill has completely cooled down before cleaning the outside.

  • For effective cleaning, use a disposable cloth that has been dampened with warm, soapy water.
  • Gently wipe away any grease or residue from the outer surface of the grill.
  • Avoid using oven cleaner, abrasive cleansers, or abrasive cleaning pads, as these can damage the grill's exterior.

By following these simple steps, you can keep the outside of your pellet grill looking clean and well-maintained, enhancing its overall appearance and longevity.

Cleaning the Ash from Inside the Fire Chamber and around the Burn Pot

To safely clean the ash from your pellet grill, make sure that the grill is completely cool before proceeding.

It is important to remove excess ash from the firepot to ensure that your fire stays lit. After each use, inspect the firepot and clean out any ash buildup.

  • To clean the ash from in and around the firepot, start by removing the grill grates, grease drip tray, and heat shield. You can easily remove most of the ash outside of the firepot by using a small metal fireplace shovel or a similar tool.
  • Using a vacuum cleaner is the most effective way to remove ash from the burn pot, but it must be done with caution to avoid any fire risk. We recommend using a utility-type, bag-less vacuum cleaner with a metal collection canister for this task. However, any vacuum cleaner can be used safely as long as you follow the proper procedure.
  • If your vacuum cleaner is a bagless model, make sure to empty any debris from the collection chamber before vacuuming the ashes from inside the burn pot. Once the burn pot is clean, promptly empty the collection chamber into a metal container, ensuring there is no remaining ash residue left.
  • If your vacuum cleaner uses a disposable bag, install a new bag before vacuuming the ashes from inside the burn pot. Once the burn pot is clean, remove the bag from the vacuum cleaner and place it in a metal container without delay.

Remember to clean out the ash from the burn pot after each use to maintain the proper functioning of your pellet grill. Failure to do so may result in the pellets not igniting or a buildup of pellets in front of the auger tube, potentially causing a burn back inside the tube.

Disposing of Ashes

When it comes to disposing of ashes, it is crucial to take the necessary precautions. To safely dispose of ashes, you will need a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Make sure to place the container on a flat surface underneath your pellet grill. This setup will help prevent any potential accidents or fire hazards.

  • Place the ashes in a metal container that has a tight-fitting lid. This container should be placed on a non-combustible surface, such as the ground or a non-flammable floor, and kept away from any materials that can catch fire. It is recommended to keep the ashes in a closed container until they have cooled down completely before final disposal, whether that is burying them in soil or dispersing them locally.
  • To remove the ash tray and empty the ashes, simply pull out the Release Spring Pin located on the left side of the unit, and then pull the tray outward. This allows for easy and safe disposal of the ashes.

You can utilize the Cleanout function on the HALO Controller to remove the last remaining pellets from the pellet hopper and auger tube so that all pellets are effectively removed and emptied into the container. You'll want to perform this function prior to disposing of the ashes.

General Guidelines + Maintenance Instructions:

Maintaining a pellet grill is essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. Here are some steps to help you maintain your pellet grill:

  1. Always set up your grill on a stable and level surface to prevent accidental tipping or uneven cooking. All Prime Pellet Grills come equipped with a bubble level that ensures easy leveling on any surface. You can adjust the Prime300's feet by turning them, and the Prime550, 1100, and 1500 caster wheels can be adjusted by using the included magnetic HALO wrench.
  2. After each use, allow the grill to cool down before cleaning. Empty the pellet hopper if there are leftover pellets, as moisture can cause them to swell and clog the auger. Remove the cooking grates and grease trays to clean them thoroughly. Use a grill brush or scraper to remove any residue. Wipe down the interior and exterior surfaces of the grill, including the lid, with a damp cloth.
  3. Ash buildup can affect airflow and temperature control. Check the ash accumulation in the burn pot and ash collection tray regularly. Empty the ash collection tray when it's around one-third full to prevent airflow issues.
  4. The auger is responsible for feeding pellets into the firepot. Inspect the auger for any pellet fragments or dust buildup that could impede its movement. You can clean the auger by running the Cleanout function and letting any remaining pellets run through.
  5. Excessive grease buildup can cause flare-ups and impact the taste of your food. To prevent this, HALO Prime Pellet Grills are equipped with an XL grease management system that effectively directs grease away from the firepot. It's important to regularly check the grease container and empty it as needed. For quick and easy cleanup, use our convenient Grease Container Foil Liners.  Removing the grease from the grease container is essential to maintaining a clean grill and preserving the delicious flavor of your food.
  6. Regularly check the igniter for signs of wear or damage. Replace it if necessary. Clean the firepot to remove any ash or residue that could block the airflow or affect ignition.
  7. To maintain accurate temperature readings, it is important to clean your temperature probes regularly. When the probes are not in use, disconnect them from the meat probe connection port and set them aside to keep them clean and protected. Additionally, make sure to place the protective cap on the probes to prevent any moisture accumulation inside the jack receptacle.
  8. Your HALO Prime Pellet Grill is equipped with a porcelain grill grate that does not require seasoning. However, it is recommended to preheat the grill for approximately 30-45 minutes during the initial use to burn off any residual oils inside. Make sure to keep the lid closed during this burn-off cycle. After cooking, use a soft-bristle grill brush or scraper to remove debris from the grate. Avoid using abrasive brushes or tools that may damage the porcelain coating. With regular cooking, the porcelain-coated grates will naturally develop a patina over time. The oils from the food you cook will help season the grates, resulting in improved non-stick performance.
  9. Store your all-natural hardwood pellets in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture absorption. Moist pellets can lead to clogs and affect combustion.
  10. If you won't be using the grill for an extended period, clean it thoroughly, remove pellets, and store it in a dry place. To keep your pellet grill protected from the elements when it's not in use, it's important to use a weather-resistant cover. We recommend using the Prime Series Pellet Grill Cover that is designed specifically for your grill model. This cover will help to shield your grill from rain, snow, and other weather conditions, ensuring that it stays in great condition for years to come.
