PCBA/Control Board

Your Prime Pellet Grill, like any appliance, may encounter common issues over time. This guide is designed to offer you detailed, step-by-step instructions to address essential repairs that might arise during the lifespan of your versatile backyard, tailgating, and on-the-go companion. Whether you're a seasoned chef or a backyard enthusiast, rest assured that these tips will keep your cooking experiences running smoothly.

Before you begin

When disassembling, reassembling, or installing a new part, it's always a good idea to take photos before you begin. Focus on fasteners, wire placements, and part positions. This will make it easier for you to ensure you are reassembling everything in the right place after you complete the repair.

PCBA/Control Board

The decision to replace the PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) on your pellet grill smoker depends on various factors, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. Here are some situations where you might consider replacing the PCBA:

  • Malfunctions or Failure: If the PCBA is malfunctioning or has completely failed, and troubleshooting or repairs don't resolve the issue, replacement might be necessary.

  • Visible Damage: Physical damage to the PCBA, such as burnt components, melted areas, or other visible signs of damage, may warrant replacement.

  • Persistent Issues: If you consistently experience issues with temperature control, auger function, or other critical components controlled by the PCBA, and these issues cannot be resolved through other means, replacement might be the best solution.
  • Warranty Coverage: Effort and pride goes into every product that earns the Halo badge. Consumers should REGISTER MY HALO upon receipt to activate a 5-year warranty on all Prime Pellet Grills. To replace the PCBA/Control board, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the 6 tabs that hold the control board in place. You can find these tabs by opening the hopper lid and looking on the underside of the control board. There are 3 tabs on each side that need to be depressed. If you're having trouble depressing the tabs, a flathead screwdriver can be a useful tool.
  2. Once the board has been freed from the panel, gently pull the wires up from the housing unit until you see the quick disconnects.
  3. If you're unable to fully pull the wires up due to entanglement, you may need to remove the right access panel, located on the right-hand side of the hopper housing. This will give you more room to remove the wiring.
  4. Once all the wires connecting the old board are removed, carefully remap the wires to the new board.
  5. After reconnecting all the wires, it is important to turn on the grill and make sure it is functioning properly before securing the board back in place. Once you are satisfied with the grill's performance, carefully align the panel and push it until you hear a "click" indicating that the tabs have securely locked it in place.

To reset the PCBA/Control board, follow these steps:

  1. Begin by following the normal start-up process. However, when you reach the set temperature function, pause and do not confirm the temperature as it will initiate the warmup process.
  2. While on the set temperature function screen, press and HOLD the control knob as if you were turning off the unit.
  3. While continuing to HOLD the control knob down:
    1. Deactivate the unit by turning off the power. You can do this by disconnecting the power source, such as the battery or AC power.
    2. Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adaptor, or both, if using multiple power sources.
  4. Once the power is reconnected, RELEASE the control knob.
  5. To verify that the reset was successful, a program code will briefly display on the LCD screen. This code may differ between units, but it will consistently begin with HO. (For example, if you have the Prime300, the code will start with HO1 and then the version of firmware.)
